Greetings Teachers, Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members: This semester, we have been busy planning for the next academic year. The school board adopted new literacy instructional materials for the elementary school and new Spanish instructional materials for the high school. Our secondary math teachers are researching the best instructional materials while our science teachers are aligning their work with the Next Generation Science Standards. We are working hard toward our strategic goals of Powerful Teaching and learning, District Climate, and Early Learning. It is an exciting time in our district.
Greetings Teachers, Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members: When I was searching for a way to begin writing this letter, I was wondering why is it still cold today. I wore my hat, gloves and used my space heater at work. I was pondering with the thought thinking that the beginning of spring occurs on the first day of March. I even bought spring candy! However, the ground hog did predict that we will have six more weeks of winter. I am looking forward to the spring season! Are you? The good news is that there are many reasons to celebrate and recognize individuals and/or groups of people: March is Women’s History Month and National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. In our state and our district, we will be celebrating the classified employees for all of their contributions in our educational system. Thank you for all that you do for our teachers, students and families!
Greetings Teachers, Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members: Happy Chinese New Year! I love the word new because of its meaning. A new year, new beginnings, new semester, and new knowledge. In 2017, we are starting off the year with new learnings!! In January, we launched ParentLink. The District has partnered with Blackboard (Education and Technology Services) to expand its communications outreach with a mobile app that is now available in the online iTunes® and Google Play® app stores for free. The latest district news and information is now available on smartphones and mobile devices. Amazing!
Greetings Teachers, Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members: Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah! Feliz Navidad! Happy Kwanzaa! Happy Solstice! This time of year is special in our community because we rejoice in spending time with one another at holiday events, band concerts and family gatherings. It is a time of caring, sharing and reflection. I often find myself thinking about the things I value most: quality time with family and friends, education and the caring people I work with every day. I am so thankful for the dedicated and inspiring teachers and staff in our schools, eager students and engaged parents. We have been looking forward to the New Year. A group of dedicated individuals is working to research best options for the location and program for the important transition year of sixth grade. We are also working with an architect in designing the Turnbull Gym Locker room. Our technology department is in the process of implementing our tech levy plan. ..
As I reflect on the past month, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve a generous and vibrant community. Last month, the San Juan Public Schools Foundation held its annual phone-a-thon. It was an honor to volunteer and call community members. The wonderful thing about the experience was watching students, parents, teachers, staff and principals make phone calls and celebrate with a hand clapper or noise maker with the excitement of the pledged donations. I would like to thank the SJPSF Board for their dedication to our students and teachers. Collaboration is alive in the San Juan Island Community. It is evident with our Service Organizations (i.e., Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor, The Kiwanis Club, United Way, Rotary, the Lions club, etc.), our non-profits, San Juan County, the Town of Friday Harbor, EMS, San Juan Fire District, Island Rec, local businesses, faith organizations, and institutions of higher learning. I have met with several members of our community and will continue to meet with you during the future months. I plan to have a community meeting to share our strategic plan and give you an update on where we are with our goals. It is important to keep you informed on the work that we are doing in the district.
Greetings Teachers, Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members: The fall season is here. School has been in session for a month and we are realizing the district’s new mission: To promote excellence, engaging every student, every day, through superior instruction, high expectations and academic content that is both challenging and individually relevant. I would like to say thank you to all the new teachers, staff, students and their families for choosing San Juan Island School District. We love to put children first and pride ourselves with demonstrating our commitment and dedication to education.
Greetings Teachers, Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members, This summer my family and friends visited San Juan Island. Their visit reminded me how important it is to nurture the genius and greatness in everyone. Every moment I spent with them, I learned something new, an acronym, a Spanish word, or how much smarter they are than me in areas that I am not an expert (and I can tell you there are many). Let me share with you one story. It was my grandson’s second visit. This time, I asked a few local friends if they would assist us with one of our local cultural activities, kayaking, with my grandson. At first, he was apprehensive because he did not have any experience. Our friend, Humberto, was his teacher and guided him on the waters, Humberto explained how to paddle and turn left and/or right. Carmen assured my daughter and son-in-law, that Ian will be fine. By the end of the lesson, my grandson’s competence and confidence increased. His teacher, Humberto, did a great job.
